Book Review : Midsummer's Equation by Keigo Higashino

The Green Rock Inn in the sleepy beach town of Hari Cove, is slowly loosing its charm. Once a bustling tourist town, Hari Cove is at the verge of a decline and so it Green Rock Inn. Narumi and her parents are struggling to keep it afloat. Narumi on the other hand is working to save the ocean which she is very passionate about. However, everything goes topsy turvy when one of the hosts staying in the Inn dies. The victim is a former detective with the homicide dept and hence it draws a lot of attention. When the police figures that the death might not be a mere accident, everyone comes under the radar of suspicion. The Tokyo homicide department asks Detective Kusanagi for help as they know Kusanagi's ally Prof Yakawa is also in Hari Cove staying at the Green Rock Inn.

The story features the duo Prof Yukawa and Detective Kusanagi. Their joint investigation not only leads to unveiling of the mystery but it also opens up the depth of human emotions. How far can a person go to protect the ones they love? What are the implications of those sacrifices on the people in their lives? Prof Yakawa, through his observations and simple chats, taps into the depths of people's heart and tries to equate the past with the present. His subtle yet assertive ways of finding the truth is fascinating.

Kiego Higashino is an absolute master in creating the plot and keeping the reader hooked at it. Like all of his other mystery novels he has excelled in Midsummer's Equation.
